Litany for Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church ~ 70th Anniversary

(This was a piece for last week’s service that was omitted for time!}

Beverly Scaff wrote a history of the congregation from 1951 to 1984 and she called it–

So great a vision.

Providing a place for those to connect who wanted to find other questioning souls

So great a vision.

To build a place where children can be raised with values that affirm their goodness and their wholeness.

So great a vision.

And what could once fit in a living room then moved to a building and then to two and then on to this campus –

So great a vision.

While the reach of those living these values, this Unitarian and Universalist heritage moved beyond any walls and spilled onto the streets–

So great a vision.

Touching hundreds, connecting scores and shaping lives over seven decades and always making room for the newcomer because it was expansive, because it was–

So great a vision

And always remaining part of a Living Tradition which answers the calls of the times—even those that stretch us beyond our comfort zones.

So great a vision.

What will the next decade bring? Where will we go with

–so great a vision?

May we each do our part to move it forward.

May we nurture and protect it in these trying times

May we be its stewards so that those we can’t yet imagine will step through its doors and say—wow—

So great a vision.
