Leslie’s Logos – May 2025
Language is amazing. One of the things about living creatures that I find inspiring is to think about when language developed among people. Imagine a world before language and the many decisions that led to decided what deserved a name! Pretty early, humans decided they needed an idea for this something that was part of our being and yet not exactly the same as our physical or even emotional being. I am referring to what we now call “spirit”. The word spirit is linked to the root of the word for breath which shows how intrinsic and essential it is.
In May 2025, remembering to breathe is to remember that we are creatures endowed with many gifts and facilities. Remembering that we are also creatures of the spirit reminds us that we are tied to the largest sources of truth which transcend any human conflict.
In our tradition, truth holds a very venerated place. And somehow that emphasis has also morphed into the fallacy that the only intelligences we value are those of the mind and the body. In this fallacy, what we cannot see is not truthful. Yet we know that spiritual truths are real: the healing power of Love, the power of inspiration, and the essential nature of Hope and we need to have something larger to believe in and goals to move forward to feel the filter in our lives in times, which are disillusioned or disrupted we can grasp even harder on the tangible and forget theses essential resources.
Our community can be a place which harbors truths held within our minds, bodies and spirits. Amid the analysis and the worries, the essential actions and the angst, remember the nurture of spirit which emerges when we take the time for contemplation, rest and exploration of the largest truths. Let us be a place where we shelter important spiritual truths including the fact that community heals. Let’s do so by remembering how essential our care for one another is and by looking for new ways to extend that care to one another and our larger community.
In faith and perseverance,
Leslie
