Commitment Has Many Faces

This weekend we are honoring many kinds of commitment.

Some will be taking to the streets to protect the democracy which is a critical part of our religious tradition. The spirit of some of the founding leaders of this nation including John and Abigail Adams will be among the crowd of witnesses. This in a democracy founded in protest.

We will also be engaged in reflecting in the commitment to this community of the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church as we contemplate how we wish to celebrate the 75th year of this congregation’s existence. This community, rooted in a sanctuary campus, is a place of sustenance and nurture for many generations and serves as a resource to the larger community as well as to ourselves.

And some of us will also be living out these commitments by helping one another, bearing loving witness to the trials and tribulations of human living, nurturing our spirit and the spirits of others, by working for justice in other ways, for honoring one another’s personhoods and by continuing to learn and grow.

As we gather for our Beacon Breakfast and our service for Commitment Sunday, all these commitments will be present, examples of the many ways we live our values each day. The ability to make commitments are a freedom we should cherish every day. May this weekend be a time of gratitude for the power of commitment.
