Witnessing

I appreciate watching how many ways people are witnessing to their welcoming values. Being a witness lifts MY spirit, so I thought I’d share this vantage point with you.

Some by participating in actions to let people know their values are not theirs. By attending other events such as next Friday night’s action to protect families in Richmond where we remind one another that we are not alone in these times. By learning more about our democracy and what we need to do to hold its scattered seeds.

Many kinds of witnessing. Visiting and supporting those who have difficulties in these times when so many are too overwhelmed to notice another. Coming together to talk about grief, to share about sorrows. To support one another when the medical diagnosis is not good or when some extra cheer is warranted.

Small acts of witnessing. Calling or texting a friend when they need that little bit of encouragement. Taking the time to support a younger person worried about their future or an older person shocked to see so much they have worked for lost so with such speed. Witnessing to the needs of our own spirit through spiritual practices.

One of my favorite sights this week was a carefully trimmed pile of cardboard, the remnants of the boxes which housed the new round tables which allowed us to better witness one another at last week’s Together We Are More event. These large squares are there to enable more of us to make signs, like blank canvasses awaiting the artistry of our faithful witness.

One of the joys of my job is being witness to all of the witnessing that you are doing. Keep it up. And let’s keep witnessing.
