Small Miracles
This week I will be on the lookout for those miniscule moments when, as theologian Frederick Bruechner says, the sum exceeds the parts. As the shortest day and longest night of the year approaches, I find my senses are especially tuned into noticing thing I wouldn’t at other times. The brilliance of light which might otherwise seem ordinary. The warmth of greetings in the time of damp. The gift of time with people loved. The healing of community.
This time with its particular abundances and scarcities reminds me of how much sustenance we can get from the smallest amounts of gratitude and joy. In darker and harder times, even the little sparkles and shines are radiant.
So for those of us having brilliant days in this holiday seasons, enjoy the brilliance. And those for whom the celebration is muted, may a bit of the wonder and awe seep into your awareness.
As 2024 ends and we prepare for 2025, may we do it claiming each miracle, each small struggle, each gift.
