Legacy
Some weeks almost seem to have a theme. The theme of this week is legacy. Legacy is a word whose etymological tendrils wind around concepts such as “the right to inherit,” “legitimacy,” and also “to entrust with.” A rich word. A word with spiritual power when we remember it.
Tuesday’s debates made me think about our legacy of democracy, how endangered it is and whether I am doing enough to try to protect it. Whether our progressive faith communities are.
Saturday’s memorial made me recognize the extent to which we leave legacies to those whose lives we touch as we celebrated a woman who lived 102 years in awareness and engagement which touched so many at such a core level.
Sunday we will open a library which in the Owl Room which contains two kinds of legacy donations—a living legacy of money to buy the shelves and the collection of books which will rest upon them and which represent our faith inheritance. A faith committed to many sources of truth and to power. In the upper cabinets will eventually rest many of our historical documents for this church.
Legacy matters and is a source of strength for these times. And we keep building them, for good or no good, every day….
