#1:Call on Congress to stop extrajudicial killings and military escalation with Venezuela. Members of Congress are reporting that a video of the US military killing people on a boat in the Caribbean could be evidence of a war crime. #2: Call on your CA state reps and governor to increase funding for K-12 schools: Richmond's teachers and staff went on strike last week; San Francisco teachers have voted to authorize a strike; Berkeley teachers declared an impasse in negotiations. What’s going on? The bottom line is that the state is failing to fund schools at levels high enough to get teachers to stay in their jobs. Across the state, schools are understaffed and teachers and staff are underpaid. There’s a statewide campaign, We Can’t Wait, to fully fund our schools, even if it means raising taxes on the wealthy.

Even as we struggle with increasing threats on our livelihood and rising fascism, many have stepped in to provide critical material and emotional care for their families, friends and neighbors. What if we were able to leverage our social services and basic needs programs into footholds to anchor a broad-based movement of poor and dispossessed people that can turn these activities into political demands of our government and society at large?

At this month’s statewide organizing meeting, we’ll delve into this question, examining the Kairos Center’s report, A Matter of Survival: Organizing to Meet Unmet Needs and Build Power in Times of Crisis. We’ll listen to Kairos Center director of research and policy Shailly Gupta Barnes describe the lessons and insights that they gathered from more than 40 leaders of 35 community-based organizations and social institutions.
