Re-Membering and Re-Gathering
Back in the day, we used to ask people to bring a friend to church. You know, someone who had no idea that a faith community could be a place where spirituality is also thoughtful and the emphasis is on connection and community rather than dogma. This month, I invite you to bring a friend to church (or even two or half a dozen?)—friends you already have and met through church but who you don’t see as much.
The pandemic shelter changed how people attend MDUUC. More are online or watching the services on YouTube at a more convenient time for them. While our services are lively and full of wonderful people to meet, sometimes that means you don’t see your favorite person. Are there people you are missing seeing when you come on campus? Why not call them and arrange a day to go together? Have a friend’s circle of people you met at 55 Eckley and whom you share connection and combat loneliness? Then why not all come on the same day? Or what about an activity you share—maybe all the housing folks can come together for the Men’s Breakfast or Open Women’s Group? Might be a fun competition! (Look for the whiteboard. In Bortin Hall all September).
So much has changed and yet what has stayed the same is that being together matters. We are grateful that we have ways to gather through our streaming now as well and we are looking for ways to enhance that such as a new community circle led by our Intern Minister Rose Reidel. AND for those who can come to be in your faith community, please come! If you need a ride, let Rose know. If you have a pup you don’t spend enough time with, bring her to the Patio. If scents bother you, try the Patio. If you have only been online so far, take the step. Our spiritual explorations help us remember what we believe in.
I also welcome one-on-one conversations with people who would like to have a conversation about their connection with the congregation. Every member and friend is important and I look forward to these opportunities to connect.
This fall will demand that we are resilient and strong, sustained by our faith and with spirits strong.
In faith and perseverance,
Leslie
