Mission

As one of the most urgent, powerful issues of our time, racial justice requires the systematic fair treatment of people of all races, resulting in equitable opportunities and outcomes for everyone. As Unitarian Universalists, we affirm and promote our Seven Principles, and as members of MDUUC, we promise to challenge each other to live our values.

We collaborate with other multiracial community and faith-based organizations to be a radically inclusive religious community that feeds the human spirit and creates justice and compassion in our community through spiritually grounded action.

We envision a society where we struggle together with love for justice, human dignity, and a sustainable world. Our congregation embraces diverse theologies, as well as various generations, sexual orientations, races, ethnicities, cultures, classes, and abilities. In our commitment to “standing on the side of love,” we show up again and again for justice.

What We Have Done

• Collaborated with the Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization (CCISCO), Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County, the UU Justice Ministry of California, and other faith-based and community organizations to create opportunities for education and action
• Mobilized the congregation for public witnesses to bring a message of racial justice on Martin Luther King Day, show solidarity against violence during Night Walks in Antioch, advocate for the passage of Proposition 47, support the LGBTQ community following the Orlando tragedy, and speak to representatives on Immigration Day at the Capitol
• Supported educational programs, trainings, and activities, including the UU Beloved Conversations class, prison reform, anti-Islamophobia, Black Lives Matter, Racial Justice Summits, immigration, and book discussions (Just Mercy, The New Jim Crow, and White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack)
• Worked with other social justice committees to mobilize congregational support of legislation to support racial justice, including Proposition 47, the Public Safety and Rehabilitation Act (sentencing reform), raising the state minimum wage, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, and Health for All

What We Are Doing

• Collaborating with multicultural, multiracial, and faith-based partners to plan activities and events to support racial justice
• Supporting the UU Justice Ministry of California and other interfaith and interracial organizations in public witness
• Offering regional justice trainings, workshops, speakers, films, book discussions, or other activities that inspire and empower members and friends of MDUUC to get involved in the work of racial justice
• Mobilizing congregational support for legislation initiatives and bills that promote racial justice and equity
